DIY Soy Candles

Good morning friends!
I did some guest posting here this week and made a fun soy candle from a pint paint tin.  I seriously think this is a contender for Christmas gifts or my craft show this year.  It is SO cute!

And of course I used an image from the Graphics Fairy and made it printable for you to grab yourself.

Check out Cheri’s blog for the tutorial.

Have a great day!

DIY Bauble Ring

Good Morning Friends!

Hope your week is off to a wonderful start:) If not, maybe a fun project will make it better…or maybe the weekend, but I can’t give you that:)

I am so digging this ring and, as always, you can totally make it yourself on the cheap.

You need:

Thick gauge wire– I am flexible on exactly how thick, it needs to be bendable (by you), but strong enough to hold the shape of a ring while you are banging it all over the place on your hand.

Thin gauge wire–also flexible here, I used 24 gauge which is about right. It should be super small and very bendable.

Assorted beads–you can usually buy a pack of mixed ones, but they should be smallish with a couple of larger ones.

Needle-nosed wire cutters–or similar tools

1. You need to determine what you will use to wrap the base of the ring, so go get a ring that currently fits and search the house for a cylinder that size.  You could try markers,  wood touch-up pens, your makeup drawer… I found Bobbi Brown to be the right size for me:)

2. This is seriously the hardest part. Wrap the wire around the ring a few times. I actually started in the middle and wrapped both directions, it seemed more manageable.  It’s difficult to stay tight to your cylinder, so go slow and make it look good.

3. Next overlap a little so the wires are sticking out to the sides of the ring instead of straight up (like in above photo).

4. Put a largish bead on one end and needle-nose it into place. I usually turn the wire with the tips, then smash the bead and the wire together with the pliers.  This does not need to look perfect, it will mostly be hidden, just make sure that raw wire is tucked in somewhere. I like that the tucked in wire meets each other (so it covers the whole space between the beads, making it easier to do the next steps). Also, see how my rings are spaced far apart? That’s fine, you will pull them together later when you wrap the other beads.

5.  Choose several smallish beads to make the top part. You could throw a large in there too, but mostly small.

6. String a few at a time onto your 24 gauge wire and wrap around the ring, then add more and wrap again…3 times (or more if your end beads are further apart). The beads should just be on top of the ring, not under.  It should use 2-4 beads per wrap. The wrap should extend from one end bead to the other and make a nice dome.  Don’t get frustrated if your first ring isn’t wonderful, it took me a few times.  There are bad rings in the garbage. Just sayin’.

7. Now twist the ends together, snip the ends and tuck it in tight.

See how I scooted the beads over and hid the twist? Now just move the beads back. Easy.

8. You are so done! Look at your awesomeness.

9. Now put it on your happy hand.

10. Then you can channel a little Beyonce, “If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it.  Wuh Uh Oh Uh Uh Oh Uh Oh Oh Uh Uh Oh.”

DIY Resin Cameo Necklace

DIY Cameo Necklace…yes please!

You will love making and wearing this funness!

I actually have 100 things to say about making this project, but I will save those for the end.

What you should focus on now is the brilliant finished product.

I am so totally in love with it. And PS, I will be totally in style while I strut my stuff .

Because I do make a habit of strutting my stuff pretty much all the time.

:)

You need ICE Resin (wouldn’t it be cool if I hadn’t cut off the package name in the photo)

Round bezels, these are 17mm (buy them here)

2 images from the Graphics Fairy that I combined.

The origionals are here and here if you are savvy and want to make your own colors.

Otherwise you have 2 options.  As seen below.

But wait, you don’t have to download and size it, just download and open this word doc and print it on card stock.

Aren’t they lovely.

Once you print the document just trim a little around the leafy outside border.

I made this for a 17mm item.

I am an awful scissor user, part of this is because I use the same scissors for everything…

paper, fabric, opening boxes, cutting my bangs…my family can attest to this.

So anyway my circle was a bit janky. It doesn’t matter.

I used a mechanical pencil to press it into the bezel.  It will be a little big and run up on the side, can you see that in the right photo?

That’s correct, so just make sure you get it centered pretty well.

Now let’s enter dreamland where I have step by step instructions of the next part…

Mix the components of the ICE Resin together and follow package instructions for preparation.

Using a craft stick, tooth pick type thing, add the resin to the bezel.

Please go slowly, it comes out like a freight train if you aren’t careful.

It will self-dome, which is amazing.

Let dry overnight.

Aren’t they sweet?

I love the pink, but I had a really difficult time photographing it.

Beautiful!

Tips:

1. The graphic situation: this is made for a 17mm item.  The bezels come in loads of sizes.  If yours is a different size then download the large picture and insert it into a word document. Right click and format the photo, click on size and set the size to a little bigger that the bezel.  If you need a mm to cm conversion chart, here one is. Then print it out on card stock.

2. See how my bezel has a large ring that makes it lay not so perfectly flat on the table? You need to put something under the other end to level it or your resin will by loppy.

3. Don’t touch it too soon, you will fingerprint it…I don’t..uh…know this from experience…someone told me.

4. The package I bought was $11 and contained only ONE application, you can’t save or reuse this stuff and you have to mix at least 1 oz for it to work.  So online they have bigger jars that are probably a better deal. Or, make a bunch of stuff at once.  There are several ideas on the site here.

ENJOY!

DIY Luggage Tag and the 2011 Color of the Year

Hey friends!

Hope you had a fab weekend!

I made these sweet luggage tags with A Dub today.

Not only that, it was sunny outside.  I know…right…crazy.

We used the 2011 color of the year.  Because…let’s be honest, we must have chic and trendy luggage tags.

First go get the graphic .

It’s from Graphics Fairy…who I love:)

Then wave your magic wand in a computer program of your choice.

Easiest way:

Open a Word Doc

Insert the picture that you have already saved to your desktop.

Right-click on the picture and choose format.

In the layout section, choose behind text.

Now go back and click inside the image and the cursor should be there.

Type your letter.

The font I used was Trajan Pro.

Get it here.

I also added an address and phone number on the back.

I won’t show you all that, well, for obvious privacy reasons. :)

But here is a snatch of it below.

The font I used for the address was FontleroyBrown.

Which you can download here.

Then we took to Kinko’s to be laminated. Cost about $2

Here are my laminating thoughts:

You can buy 3m pouches at some stores that will work if no place around you does laminating.

There are different thicknesses, the thicker the better.

I love  L.O.V.E the UPS store.  They have never done me wrong. Great laminating, no bubbles, and they will round the corners for you.

Unfortunately, they were closed today.

So you aren’t seeing their fine work here. :(

Oh well.

Here are the eyelets I used in the two above pictures.

There are instructions, but you want to put the base down, then the long silver part then the peice UPSIDE DOWN, then the short silver part then the hammer tool.

Then hammer it in a few times.

Works like a charm.

Now here is our color of the year ribbon.

Honeysuckle…or as close as we could get to it.

I love it.

Make some for your friends.

They will love it.

Now…can I put it on my luggage and head for fun in the sun?

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I think my sister and I are channeling Laura Ingalls these days.

We totally made our own clothes soap.

It was really cheap.  Under $7 and this will last forever!

You can totally do this too, it’s super easy.

To make about 4 mason jars full you will need:

6 cups Borax

4 cups baking soda

4 cups washing soda

4 cups Fels-Naptha bar soap (almost 2 bars)

Grate the bar soap, I have read that you can use Dove or some other soap if you can’t find this particular one.

But I will say…

I live in the city.

The C.I.T.Y.

No chickens. No cows.

And my Publix sold all this stuff.

Now put it all in a bowl and mix it really well.

Also, you should know, this is very powdery and was starting to go everywhere.

Up our nose, in our mouth.

Just sayin.  Try to mix carefully.

Now put it in jars or an air-tight container.

Done.

You will need 2 tablespoons per load.

OK, here’s the deal on the HE washing machines.

HE washing machines need special soap that is low-sudsing.

And this is, so you really should be fine.

It’s totally safe in mine and my sisters.

Also the Duggars have a recipe that’s similar and they use it in HE. So there ya go.

You can make a sweet tag if you want to give as a gift.

I used cotton butcher twine to attach a clothes pin.

Then added a homemade tag that you can download here.

(Thanks Graphics Fairy for the label border)

I thought later that I should have included instructions on how much to use.

I think it would be cute to write it on the clothes pin.

Or you could attach another tag.

Happy Little House on the Prairie!

And happy saving a lot of money.
