I do a lot of thrift store shopping. A LOT. I pretty much buy all my clothes there. So does my sister. And her kids. And Jeremy’s sister. And her kids. And my mom. And Jeremy’s mom. You get the idea. Here are some latest cutie finds.

There are lots of things I look for in a potential “find.”
1. I look at the tag. I typically buy nicer brands because the quality is better and they last longer. I don’t love pilling sweaters and mis-shaped t-shirts. Do you? If you aren’t familiar with loads of brand names, just look at the tag. The nicer the tag, the better the brand. This one is made of fabric and has a button sewn on it, that’s extra care taken by a clothier. Also look for an embroidered name or logo as a sign of quality. I do sometimes buy a second hand item originally from a discount store, but it’s a rarity, and I have to really love it.

2. I also look for unique items that can be paired with white button-downs or long-sleeved tees. These are the items that would cost the most brand new. I typically then stock up on t-shirts at Old Navy, Target or Gap. I also LOVE Alternative Apparel, if I can ever get my hands on it at a reasonable price.

3. Look for seasonal clothes all year long. I do love to layer, which makes it possible to get a lot of mileage from summer tops.. Plus, often the summer section is under-shopped in the winter, leaving it full to the brim of loveliness.

4. Look over every inch of every item. Hidden rips, tears or stains will not make for a good buy. Also look at the care instructions and be prepared to care for it as directed. Sometimes a nicer brand name carries nicer care instructions with it. I think it’s usually worth it.

5. Try on everything. Everything. If it is ill-fitting, get rid of it. We are in the business of saving money, not wasting it on clothes that don’t fit well and make us feel like fumps. Most thrift stores have bad lighting and mirrors straight out of the fun house, so it’s always helpful to being an entourage along to give opinions.

6. Don’t pay too much, and ask for a better deal if necessary. This coat is a prime example. I found it at Goodwill for $40. Now in my experience, Goodwill prices the highest, but good grief, this coat if from the Gap, not Burberry! So as I was looking it over I found a small cigarette hole. I felt $40 was an over-price for that condition, so I asked the cashier, and she gave it to me for $19! I got a cuttie embroidered patch from my Grandma’s stash, and now I have a super fun winter coat. Bonus: it’s the color of Polly’s hair, which inevitably finds it’s way onto all my winter coats.

Do you have something awesome from a thrift store bin? Garage sale deal? I love to hear about fun finds!
